If, after the initial treatment, your tooth fails to heal or continues to experience pain, Drs. Allen Rosenthal and Agnes Herceg may recommend an endodontic retreatment to help heal your diseased tooth. For more information on endodontic retreatment in Stamford, Connecticut, and to make your appointment at Advanced Endodontics & Microsurgery of Stamford, PC, please contact our office at 203-324-9239.

With the appropriate care, teeth that have received endodontic treatment can last as long as your other natural teeth. If, however, your tooth does not heal, or pain returns, you may need an endodontic retreatment. In some cases, pain may return to the area months, or even years, after your initial treatment.

Your tooth may fail to heal or become re-infected due to one or more factors, including:

  • Curved or narrow canals that were not treated during your initial procedure.
  • Complicated canals that went undetected in your previous treatment.
  • Your crown or other restoration failed to prevent saliva from contaminating the inside of your tooth.
  • Your crown or other restoration was not placed at the appropriate time following your initial procedure.
  • New decay that exposes the root filling material from your previous treatment, causing infection.
  • A cracked or loose filling or dental crown which exposes the tooth to new infection.

During your endodontic retreatment, our doctors will reopen the tooth to gain access to the root canal filling material. They will clean out the canals to examine and treat the inside of the infected tooth. Once the area has been cleaned and treated, our endodontists will fill and seal the canals again, and place a temporary filling in the tooth, pending the placement of a more permanent restoration to restore the full function and appearance of your tooth.

We invite you to contact our practice today to schedule your consultation with our endodontists and to learn more about root canal retreatment.
